Covid-19: Workplace Temperature Screening
Our products are originally designed for contactless temperature monitoring of equipment. As an emergency solution, we have enabled them to monitor for elevated skin temperature (EST) too. They do not have the accuracy of medical grade systems and are not be considered or used as medical grade ones. They are not designed for the specific intention of human fever detection nor the diagnosis, mitigation or prevention of disease or health conditions. Where the use of our products is permitted, they should always be used indoors and complemented with medical grade devices for confirmation and additional screening. In the USA the use of our thermal cameras and sensors is allowed / authorized as part of the FDA's emergency guidance.

Infrared IR sensors & thermal cameras
for staff & visitors temperature monitoring

Countries have shown that it is possible to reduce the spreading of the SARS-CoV-2 or Novel Corona virus by implementing strong protective measures while trying to keep the economy going. In the USA, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) recommends the daily health checks of employees before they enter the work site. The WHO (World Health Organization) also recommends the temperature screening at the workplace.

One of those measures is the use of non-contact infrared thermometry temperature measurement to screen for elevated skin temperatures (EST) in the workplace.

Employees and visitors can have their temperature before they enter the work site. This is one of the tools to keep factories, buildings, construction sites, businesses or facilities of any kind open.

Infrared (IR) EST kit
for simple, anonymous & fast screening
The infrared (IR) spot sensors operate on a one-to-one basis. Rather than looking at a crowd of people, this setup scans one person at a time.

Scanning is very fast. Every 0.6 seconds a temperature reading is processed and validated against the defined limits. This allows to quickly process large groups of people.

The kit's operation is pretty simple: the person looks straight at the sensor within a 5 to 30cm / 2-12in distance. The bright sensor's led shows a white light when no one is in front of the sensor or when the subject is too far. When within range, the led will either turn green or red. Green means that you're OK. Red means that a potential elevated skin temperature was detected.

It performs the skin temperature measurement with an accuracy of ±0.5°C in a standard environment of 20-25°C (68-77°F). Using different on board electronics and sensors, the kit has automatic compensation built-in based on ambient temperature data. This improves the kits's accuracy and reduces drifting.

Our IR spot kits work by capturing the emitted infrared radiation within a narrow field of view. The kit detects if a person is within the required 5-30cm (2-12in) range and then takes the measurement and compares it against the defined limits that you want to apply for your organization.

Keep in mind that body core temperature and skin temperature are not the same. The latter is lower than the body core temperature. You can find more information regarding this in the kit's user manual.

The kit includes following:

Optional expansions:
  • Tripod with mount adapter for the IR spot sensor

EST kit with Thermal Camera
for scanning faces & detecting highest temperature
Flir logo Our Flir embedded thermal cameras were originally made to detect thermal runaways of industrial equipment.

We have redesigned the thermal infrared cameras to enable them to screen for elevated skin temperature. Using special algorithms with special sensors, the thermal camera's accuracy is significantly improved from the normal ±5°C to ±0.5°C at 37°C in a 20-25°C environment.

The configuration does not require a black body. This makes the solution very simple to setup and operate.

Using sensors, the kit detects when a person is within less than 25cm from the sensor, detects the subject's face and then retrieves the hottest point measured in that person's face. The person needs to briefly stop. The kit screens every second using its on board 4800 temperature measurement points using an 80x60 thermal infrared array.

Body versus skin temperature
The pandemic has created a lot of innovation from many companies to bring the solutions to the market in helping fight the spread of this and other diseases.

Unfortunately many solutions are promoted with a lack of knowledge regarding infrared thermography. It is as if many of those companies only did the Design part of their innovations and did not bother about the Research part of the R&D.

Often solutions are marketed as body temperature screening solutions. Generally speaking there are only 2 ways you to accurately measure body core temperature: using a rectal or in-ear thermometer.

What we and all those other solutions measure is the temperature of the skin; not of the body. That raises another issue: the skin temperature range is NOT the same as the body core temperature range. The image illustrates the temperature of the skin as opposed of the body core temperature. This implies that you can't apply 37.6°C (99.7°F) used for body core temperature as a threshold for skin temperature.

We don't detect fever. Fever is a medical condition. What we detect is an "elevated" temperature of the skin. This could be due to fever but also other conditions could result in a person showing an elevated skin temperature.

Privacy & GDPR
The solutions have been designed with privacy at its core. Privacy requirements vary a lot by law and by workforce agreements. Our modular architecture makes it possible to cater for all possible privacy requirements: from completely anonymous self-screening without any data logging to a name and photo based with temperature data logging. You select the level of privacy you need for your organization.

The kits do not send any data to a cloud. They are not IoT. They are a 100% On-Premises solution that can be connected into a corporate network or operate in a standalone mode. All data (if and when) being recorded, is recorded only on the compact PC that is included in the kit.

Privacy Compliance Logo

The solution in its most simple form can be made GDPR compliant or compliant with the most strict privacy requirements. The easiest way to do it, would be to use the IR Spot sensor connected to a USB power source. If well positioned, then the sensors' led is only visible to person being screened. As it is not connected to a PC and as the sensor does not have any data storage capability, no data would be stored.

Built in Europe with European and US technology
Made in Europe
Unlike many overnight created solutions showing up everywhere, we have been making industrial grade infrared and thermal cameras for years to monitor critical equipment.

For this crisis we've worked with leading brands to re-engineer our products so that they would work for monitoring skin temperature instead of equipment.

We design our own products: hardware and firmware. Key components like the thermopile sensors and thermal cameras come from manufacturers in the US and Europe. Using contracted manufacturing in Europe (Romania and Bulgaria).

Final assembly is performed in Brussels, Belgium. It's where the electronics are married with their enclosure, the firmware is loaded and the sensors are calibrated. It's also where the included PC's get their Windows operating system and the required software loaded.

Operates in a networked or standalone mode
The sensor connects via USB-C to the Surface Go 2 which is shipped with the solution. Unlike regular Surface Go 2, this version ships with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise. This enables you to connect the tablet to a company / enterprise network. As you have full admin rights on it, you can integrate it within your corporate network and customize any of the settings.

It supports wifi at 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. With Windows on board this means that you can either connect the tablet PC to your own access points. However you can also configure the tablet PC to become a hotspot on its own enabling you to access wirelessly the software running on the tablet.

If you don't want to connect it to any network, then it can still operate in a standalone mode.

Using the Surface's built-in battery, the kit can operate on a single battery charge for up to 6 hours.
EST kit integrates in a network: Wifi or Wired. Even operates in standalone mode.

Access from on any device
desktop pc, tablet, smartphone
EST kit's software can be accessed from a desktop PC, tablet or smartphone
The software running on the PC that ships with the kit is a web based software. You access it using a modern browser like Chrome, Firefox or Edge.

When you connect the PC onto a network, or when you create a hotspot, then you can access the software using any desktop PC, tablet or smartphone. It works on any device thanks to its responsive and dynamic HTML5 design.

For example this enables use case scenarios where a receptionist or security guard is setting remotely from the entrance where the EST kit is deployed.

API - Application Programming Interface
integrate the EST kit sensor with your own hardware / software
By default, the sensor data can be accessed via JSON (pull) on the software running on the PC that ships with the kit.

Customers having their own hardware can now optionally integrate the EST kit sensor via USB and API. For a fee, the API can be made available in the programming language and on the operating system that you need.

The sensor connects to a USB-A or USB-C port of your device. Using an API, you can directly talk to the sensor and retrieve its values. Data can be for example be integrated with an ACS (Access Control System) or be uploaded to a cloud.

The EST sensor is also available in our standard sensor configuration whereby it connects to the base unit and then makes the data available via industrial protocols like SNMP & Modbus.

Contact us for more information regarding our API and how you can integrate it with your own solutions.

Modular & flexible configuration
EST kit mounting options
The Elevated Skin Temperature kits can be mounted in numerous different ways to enable a wide range of setups. The kit is one of the most versatile and modular EST kits currently available on the market.

Out of the box, the kit ships with strips that allows you to stick the sensor onto a wall. The tablet PC would then sit on a desk where an operator can monitor the temperature of screened visitors and employees.

With the optional tripod kit, the sensor can be mounted onto a tripod with or without the tablet PC as shown here in the animated image. Possible configurations when using a tripod:
  • sensor only - as shown in our video
  • sensor with tablet PC facing screened person
  • sensor with tablet PC facing away from screened person
